Due to the constantly occurring degradation products of the cells and the absorption of nutrients from the digestive system, the pH value of the blood could be shifted up or down again and again. This would have negative consequences for the metabolism. To prevent this, the blood has a considerable buffer capacity. This is performed by buffer systems. By buffer systems we mean mixtures of weak acids and strong bases and vice versa. They are able to counteract pH changes in the blood by binding free hydrogen ions (H+) or hydroxide ions (OH -) surpluses.
