The spinalioma is a malignant tumor that originates from the sting cell layer of the skin (stratum spinosum). The cancer is therefore also called prickle cell carcinoma.
A spinalioma is caused by chronic skin damage, especially in elderly, light-skinned people who are constantly exposed to UVB sunlight. Because the spinalioma is superficially located on the skin, the tumor could be detected early. However, the transition from chronic previous damage to cancer often takes place unnoticed.
Spinaliomas can look very different. The tumors are able to form secondary ulcers (metastases) in nearby lymph nodes as well as in distant regions of the body. Early detection and treatment of the spinalioma is important. If possible, the tumour is removed completely surgically.
