The word infarct comes from the Latin verb "infarcire" = to stuff in. It describes a tissue destruction (necrosis) caused by oxygen deficiency (hypoxia) because something has blocked the flow of coronary arteria. That could be a thrombus. Or an artriosclerotically altered artery.
