Hormones from amino acids that are released into the blood and are active for minutes to hours. They are more numerous than the amino acid derivatives. Important peptide hormones include insulin, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), human growth hormone (growth hormone, HGH), glucagon and somatotropin.
These are relatively small protein hormones. Most have less than 100 amino acids, but there are exceptions like the somatotropin that has 191. They are formed in the body and released by exocytosis if required. They remain active for minutes to hours and thus have a medium duration of action.
