Labels such as caudal and proximal indicate directions in the body that are based on Latin names.
- Dorsal: concerning the back, towards the back
- Ventral: concerning the stomach, towards the stomach
- Caudal: actually tailwards, towards the feet
- Cranial: concerning the head, towards the head
- Proximal: located towards the centre of the body or close (to something else) *Distal: away from the centre of the body" or (away from an organ)
- Medial: central, towards the centre of the body, concerning the middle structure" or simply "middle structure"
- Lateral: located laterally
