The testicles are the male gonads.

They are stored outside the abdomen because it is cooler there. A normal production of sperms only takes place at temperatures around 35°C, in the body, at 37°C, so it would be too warm. This also explains why the testicles are pulled closer to the body when it is cold and further away when it is warm.

The testicles are relatively mobile, they can be pulled up to the groin and then hang lower again. The testicles are not at the same height: One of them hangs a little lower, which is usually the left one. If a testicle needs to be removed, this usually has no effect on the male's fertility or on the testosterone level (the amount of male hormone that can be measured in the blood).

Wenn ein Mann aus bestimmten Gründen gar keine Hoden mehr hat, kann er keine Kinder mehr zeugen, da er keine Spermien mehr bilden kann. Außerdem muss ihm dann lebenslang Testosteron (männliches Hormon) von außen zugeführt werden (als Medikament), damit er keine gesundheitlichen Probleme bekommt.
