The basic substance of a cell, together with the smaller active units, the cell organelles.

Werden die Zellorganellen durch Zentrifugation entfernt, bezeichnet man das Produkt als Cytosol.

Das an der Zellwand etwas viskosere Cytoplasma bezeichnet man als Ektoplasma und das im Inneren flüssigere Cytoplasma als Endoplasma.
