Epidermis

The top layer of the skin, the top layer of our body. The epidermis consists of five layers of keratinocytes, beginning with the stratum basale, in which the later keratinizing cells are formed and released to the layers above.

The uppermost covering layer, the stratum corneum, the horny layer protects the human body from the effects of our environment with a multi-layered keratinizing squamous epithelium.
