Insulin is an important hormone in human sugar metabolism. It is formed in the beta cells of the pancreas (pancreas). The arrangement of these cells in groups diffusely scattered throughout the gland is reminiscent of islands under the microscope. Most frequently, the approximately 1 million islands are to be found in the rear part (pancreas-tail).

The name insulin therefore derives from the fact that the so-called beta cells lie in cell aggregations, which are called "Langerhans islands" after their discoverer. Insula is the Latin word for island.
