Carbon is the chemical element (element symbol C, atomic number 6) whose compounds form the molecular basis of all known life forms.
In its pure form we know it as diamond or graphite. In chemically bound form it occurs in the form of coal, carbonates, carbon dioxide, crude oil and natural gas.
Carbon can form complex molecules and has the largest variety of compounds of all chemical elements.
