Substantia Nigra

Area of the midbrain containing many nerve cell nuclei that perform unconscious controls. Because of its share of melanin and iron, it is dark to black in histological coloration.

The Substanzia nigra (black substance) has dopaminerge neurons, which control the planning and the beginning of a movement. A failure of the dopaminergic system leads to Parkinson's disease.
