Thymus

The thymus (Bries; in classical antiquity regarded as the seat of the mind) is an organ of the lymphatic system and thus part of the immune system. It is located cranial from the heart in the mediastinum behind the breastbone. With the onset of sexual maturity, the thymus regresses physiologically.

Er entsteht aus der 3. Schlundtasche, ist zunächst paarig, später unpaar, zweilappig. Bis Pubertätsbeginn wachsend, dann allmählich Umwandlung in einen Fettgewebskörper (bis auf Reste). Der Thymus ist neben dem Knochenmark das primäre lymphatische Organ des spezifischen Immunsystems, in ihm erfolgt die Entwicklung der immunkompetenten T-Lymphozyten aus Stammzellen.
