Insulin

Insulin is an important hormone in human sugar metabolism. It is formed in the beta cells of the pancreas (pancreas). The arrangement of these cells in groups diffusely scattered throughout the gland is reminiscent of islands under the microscope. Most frequently, the approximately 1 million islands are to be found in the rear part (pancreas-tail).

Der Name Insulin leitet sich daher davon ab, dass die sogenannten Betazellen in Zellansammlungen liegen, die nach ihrem Entdecker "Langerhans-Inseln" genannt werden. Insula ist das lateinische Wort für Insel.
