Inflammations of the middle ear can occur acutely or chronically.

Die akute Mittelohrentzündung ist eine Infektion der Schleimhaut des Innenohrs, die vor allem durch die Eustachische Röhre vom Nasen-Rachen-Raum her durch Viren, hämolysierende Streptokokken, Staphylokokken, Haemophilus influenzae oder Pneumokokken verursacht wird.

Treatment is usually antibiotic and with decongestant nasal drops, α sympathomimetics (e.g. xylometazoline) to restore ventilation and thus pressure equalisation via the Eustachian tube.

In chronic middle ear inflammation, only the mucous membrane or the underlying bone can be affected.
