Protein biosynthesis or gene expression, formerly also known as protein synthesis, is the production of a protein or polypeptide in living organisms. Proteins as well as polypeptides, oligopeptides and dipeptides are chains of amino acids that differ in length and sequence. They are formed on the basis of the genetic information given in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) on the ribosomes of living cells.
