Genes that use the proteins they encode to regulate normal cell division, normal cell growth and normal cell differentiation play a central role in cancer development. These genes are called proto-oncogenes. The proteins encoded by the proto-oncogenes perform a specific function in the cell nucleus, cytoplasm or cell membrane. In the normal cell, the production of these proteins is under constant control.
