PSA is a protein produced by the prostate.
In case of suspicious tactile findings or a PSA value above the threshold value of 4.0 ng/ml, a tissue sample of the prostate is also taken. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is produced by the prostate cells and excreted in the ejaculate with the prostate secretion. In small amounts, however, it also enters the blood, where it can be determined with a special laboratory test.
In prostate diseases such as cancer, inflammation or benign enlargement, the PSA level in blood serum may - but does not have to - increase. The combination of blood PSA and digital rectal examination therefore has the highest detection rate for prostate cancer.
