chromosomes (from Greek χρῶμα chrōma 'colour' and σῶμα sōma 'body') occur in the cell nuclei of the cells of living beings with cell nuclei, to which all animals, plants and fungi belong.

They are compound macromolecules that contain genetic information. They consist of DNA with many proteins.
