Deoxyribonucleic acid is the carrier of genetic information and occurs in all living organisms and in certain types of viruses. The word is composed of Des, oxygenium (oxygen), ribose and nucleic acid.

In general usage, deoxyribonucleic acid is predominantly referred to by the English abbreviation DNA.
