Cholesterol is a lipid that occurs freely in the entire human organism and in the form of cholesterol esters. It represents the precursor of bile acids and steroid hormones, is an essential component of cell membrane and myelin sheath; it is particularly enriched in adrenaln (3%), brain (10% of dry matter; only free cholesterol), skin. (24% of the skin fat), spleen, ovary, serum, erythrocyte.

Es wird überwiegend der Nahrung entnommen (exogenes Cholesterin), das bei Bedarf aus körpereigenen Depots, v.a. aus der Leber, bezogen wird) oder wird durch Biosynthese, ebenfalls v.a. in der Leber, bereitgestellt (endogenes Cholesterin).
