Mitral Valve

Two-pointed valve of the heart between left atrium and left ventricle. It prevents the blood from flowing back into the atrium. Its shape resembles a bishop's cap, it consists of two sails, hence the name.

The flap consists of 2 sails, the front and the rear sail. These are attached by tendon threads (Chordae tendineae) to the two papillary muscles in the chamber. The contraction of the papillary muscles tensions the sails in the systole, preventing the flaps from penetrating the atria.
