Synonym: myelin sheath; the isolating layer formed around the axon of the nerve cells during myelinization (myelogenesis).
In the peripheral nervous system, the product of the multiple encasement of nerve fibers by the myelin-rich cell membrane evagination of Schwann cells; in the CNS, formed by the supporting oligodendrocytes (glial cells). It is discontinuous (segmented), whereby the segments (internodes) are separated by constrictions (Ranvier-Schnürringe). The fibres wrapped in this way are referred to as marrowy or marrowy.
Der unter Markballenbildung erfolgende Untergang (Markscheidenzerfall = Myelinscheidenzerfall = Entmarkung) führt zu Funktionsverlust.
