Myelin Sheath

Synonym: myelin sheath; the isolating layer formed around the axon of the nerve cells during myelinization (myelogenesis).

In the peripheral nervous system, the product of the multiple encasement of nerve fibers by the myelin-rich cell membrane evagination of Schwann cells; in the CNS, formed by the supporting oligodendrocytes (glial cells). It is discontinuous (segmented), whereby the segments (internodes) are separated by constrictions (Ranvier-Schnürringe). The fibres wrapped in this way are referred to as marrowy or marrowy.

The destruction of the myelin sheath (myelin sheath decay = demyelination), which occurs under the formation of marrow balls, leads to a loss of function.
