Extrapyramidal Motor Function

The extrapyramidal motor system controls above all the coarser movement sequences and the tonic holding and supporting motor skills. Furthermore, by interconnecting with the cerebellum, the optical reflexcentre and the equilibrium nuclei, it ensures harmony of movements and correction of posture.

There are different core areas (collections of nerveencellular bodies), which brain nerves and special tasks can be assigned.

The extrapyramidal motor system uses these nuclei to control all unconscious or involuntary movements (e.g. the protective posture of the hands in falls, emotional gestures) and influences the state of tension of the muscles. The pyramidal motor system, which controls all conscious or arbitrary movements, is connected in parallel to this system.
