Enzyme

Ferment, specific protein that accelerates a certain chemical reaction. Only through this biocatalytic effect, the reaction rates required for energy generation and metabolism of living systems are reached or reaction directions are determined.

Enzymes are high-molecular proteins formed in the cell that control the metabolism of organisms as biocatalysts. Their tasks include ensuring cell supply, removing or degrading toxic substances, mobilizing other substances such as fats and glycogen from the depots and triggering and accelerating the processes (catalysing) necessary to produce the energy required by the organism.

Enzyme ermöglichen im Körper einen rascheren Ablauf biochemischer Reaktionen als normal. Wie «Schloss und Schlüssel» besteht eine strenge Spezifität des jeweiligen Enzyms zu seinem Substrat.

Viele Enzyme, sogenannte Schlüsselenzyme, brauchen zum Funktionieren häufig einen Helfer. Diese werden Coenzyme genannt und bestehen oft aus Vitaminen, Mineralstoffen oder Spurenelementen. Dabei wird der Proteinanteil dieses Enzymkomplexes Apoenzym genannt. Der Komplex bestehend aus Apoenzym und Coenzym heißt Holoenzym. Was ungefähr so viel bedeutet wie "Gesamt-Enzym".
