Acetylcholine

neurotransmitter of the internal uronal and neuroeffector signal transmission to acetylcholine receptors. Essential transmitter in the vegetative nervous system, especially in the parasympathetic.

Acetylcholine is on the one hand a neurotransmitter of the vegetative ganglia and on the other hand a neurotransmitter for the transmission of the nerve impulse from the efferent motor neuron to the muscle. It has a stimulating effect on the acetylcholine receptors of the downstream structures.

Klinisch werden Abkömmlinge des Pfeilgiftes der Indianer, des Curare zur Muskelentspannung bei Narkosen eingesetzt. Sie blockieren kompetitiv die Azetylcholinrezeptoren an den motorischen Endplatten. Dadurch werden zwangsweise alle Muskeln entspannt.

Das als Insektengift bekannte E 605^® hemmt beispielsweise irreversibel das Enzym zum Abbau von Acetylcholin. Das Acetylcholin kann dann an den motorischen Endplatten nicht mehr abgebaut werden, was eine Erhöhung der Neurotransmitterkonzentration zur Folge hat. Dies kann zu einem tödlichen Muskelkrampf führen.
