Proteins that directly inhibit the formation of plasmin (plasminogen activator inhibitors, PAI) or the proteolytic activity of plasmin (plasmin inhibitors). Plasminogen activator inhibitors specifically inhibit tissue and urinary plasminogen activators in body fluids and blood plasma. The most important plasmin inhibitor is alpha-2-antiplasmin (alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor, API). A regulatory influence on fibrinolysis is exerted by the fact that it is bound to fibrinogen and blocks the binding sites for plasmin and plasminogen.
