Eye Muscle

The four straight outer eye muscles ensure a "calm" fit of the eye in the eye socket. If these four muscles are tensed simultaneously, the eye moves backwards (enophthalamus). If only the inner or outer straight eye muscle tenses, then the gaze turns to the nose or temple. The upper straight eye muscle serves mainly to lift the gaze. In addition to the four straight eye muscles, there are two diagonal muscles: The lower oblique eye muscle rotates the eye mainly outwards, but can also lift the gaze. The upper oblique eye muscle rotates the eye inwards, but can also lower the gaze.
