Epithelial layer that covers and protects the cornea of the eye. The conjunctiva allows an almost friction-free movement of the eyeball in all directions of movement.
The conjunctiva contains cells and glands that are important for the tear fluid that covers the cornea like a film. Already during the first years of life lymphocytes migrate into the conjunctiva, where they fulfil an important defensive function.
