The blood buffer belongs to the complex system of acid-base balance and acts via four buffer systems (haemoglobin buffer, protein buffer, phosphate buffer and hydrogen carbonate/carbon dioxide blood buffer). Through inhalation, exhalation and other chemical mechanisms, the pH of the blood is also kept in a narrow window when the buffer systems are exhausted. The constancy of the pH value of 7.4 for women and 7.39 for men (in each case in a window of plusminus 0.015) is vital for the perfect functionality of the organ systems.
