Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease caused by an absolute or relative insulin deficiency. The characteristic feature of this disease is a permanent elevation of the blood sugar level (hyperglycaemia) and sugar excretion with the urine due to insufficiency of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.
The cause is the insufficient effect of the hormone insulin on the liver cells, muscle cells and fat cells of the human body. The disease is one of the most important diseases in internal medicine.
