For highly ionized or charged compounds, a lipophilic carrier is necessary for membrane passage. The ionized drug then binds to this carrier, is passed through the lipophilic membrane without energy and is cleaved off again on the inside. This process is rarer than simple diffusion; we call it facilitated diffusion.
