First Pass Effect

The liver is the detoxifying organ of the organism and breaks down alcohol or chemical substances into harmless substances. Drugs that are intended to partially circumvent this "first-pass effect" are administered as suppositories or with a syringe, as they do not enter the liver via the portal vein system and are quickly broken down.
