Counterregulation in Antihypertensive Drugs

The administration of calcium antagonists of the nifedipine type leads to tachycardia as a physiological counter-regulation due to rapid peripheral vasodilation. Centrally effective antihypertensives such as clonidine and a-methyldopa cause retention of water and sodium, which can compensate for the antihypertensive effect.
