Inflammation of the Heart Muscle (Myocarditis)

An inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) can be both acute and chronic. In most cases it is caused by bacteria, more rarely fungi. If it is detected and treated early, myocarditis has a good prognosis. It is a dangerous and very serious disease. Any new cardiac insufficiency must be thought of as myocarditis, especially if the disease was preceded by a flu-like infection or diarrhoea. The diagnosis can be supported by different examinations, whereby the myocardial biopsy is decisive. The symptomatic drug therapy of heart failure and physical protection are at the heart of the treatment of myocarditis.
