conjunctivitis

Various exogenous influences can penetrate the protective devices of the eye and lead to natural reactions there. With the help of tear fluid, the eye continuously defends itself against harmful influences such as pathogens, foreign substances, cigarette smoke, etc. We usually only notice these defensive reactions when they occur in excess. The blink of the eye is increasing. In this way, the eye tries to distribute the tear fluid better and increase the protection of the affected cornea. Then the production of tear fluid is increased and the eyes start to water and the nose starts to run.

In order for the immune system to be able to act, more defence cells and defence substances are brought to the site of action via the blood vessels. In addition, the vessels of the conjunctiva dilate and the eyes begin to redden. As a result of the increased blood flow, as in a normal inflammatory process, more fluid enters the tissue and swelling or local tumours develop. The swelling then presses on pain receptors in the conjunctiva. The eye itches, burns or hurts.
