Vital Control Centers

By concentrating vital centers in the medulla oblongata, a single blow to the surrounding base of the skull can be fatal. Patients who have lost their entire cerebrum due to a lack of oxygen may be able to survive without the aid of appliances if the vital centres located in the brain stem are preserved. In these cases we speak of appalic syndrome or partial death. A patient in this case is clinically dead.
