The macula mensa is part of the juxtaglomerular apparatus in the kidney. Cells in this area are very narrow and lie close together. Because the cell nuclei are closer to each other, this area appears darker in the histological staining. These cells are used to measure the sodium and potassium concentration of urine after the distal tubule. Based on the information they provide to the organism, the final concentration of urine can be adjusted in the last structures through which the urine still flows (end part of the distal tubule and collecting tube).
