Macula

Sense field in utriculus and sacculus of the organ of equilibrium.

A macula lies horizontally in the Utriculus, in the Sacculus one finds a vertical macula.

When the head is upright, the macula in the utriculus presses on the underlying sensory hairs. In the sacculus, the macula hangs against it and pulls on the receptors. The other way around, it's lying down.

The maculae can also absorb positive or negative (braking) accelerations and pass them on to the brain.
