The term meningitis describes a inflammation of the meninges and spinal cord membranes (meninges). Most meningitis are Infection Genesis. A distinction is made between viral (non-purulent) and bacterial (purulent) meningitis. In addition, various systemic diseases (e.g. collagenoses, vasculitis, sarcoidosis) or malignant changes (e.g. meningeosis carcinomatosa) as well as ionising radiation or intrathecal medication may cause meningitis.
Meningitis can be acute, chronic or recurrent.
