Myoglobin

Synonym: Muscle haemoglobin; the protein body of the muscle similar to haemoglobin: a single chain-like polypeptide bound to haem with 0.338% iron content. It serves to supply muscles with oxygen, which it binds reversibly and with approx. 6 times higher affinity than Hb. In contrast to Hb, does not bind to →Haptoglobulin; does not produce a red coloration of the serum. Its oxidation product is metmyo- or myoglobin.
