The oncotic pressure in a fluid is the proportion of the osmotic pressure caused by the colloids of a solution, especially the proteins in the blood. In the blood, the oncotic pressure creates a suction effect into the tissue, which acts against the normal hydrostatic pressure. If the protein content in blood plasma is too low, water remains in the tissue. Oedema are created.
