Medulla spinalis. Part of the CNS enclosed in the vertebral canal and reaching up to the 2nd lumbar vertebra.

The spinal cord is the central nerve bundle that brings information to and from the brain and into the body. The spinal cord of an adult of medium size is approx. 45 cm long and runs inside the spinal column in the spinal canal.

In the spinal cord we find ascending and descending nerve tracts. These belong to the white matter of the spinal cord. In addition, the spinal cord also has areas with nerve cell bodies. This area is called the gray matter of the spinal cord.

The spinal column consists of about 33 vertebrae, each with an opening, the spinal canal. Between two vertebrae, 31 branches of the spinal cord, which we call spinal nerves, run to the right and left. They lead further into all areas of the body.
