The effect of irradiation on healthy and diseased tissue is basically the same: the high-energy rays penetrate the tissue and prevent the cells from dividing. However, the human body has an important protective mechanism. His cells can repair themselves to a certain degree. The current radiation therapies are aimed at completely destroying cancer cells without severely impairing the repair and division capacity of healthy cells. However, the healthy cells have the advantage: the self-repair mechanism of the cancer cells often functions worse and slower than that of the healthy, normal cells. Therefore, the tumour cells are more severely damaged by radiation.
