plasma protein formed in the liver (β1 fraction in protein electrophoresis). transport protein for iron (there metabolic scheme) in the blood, which binds the absorbed food Fe in the mucosa cells (upper small intestine, duodenum) after oxidation with 2 Fe.+ per mole and passes it on either on functional iron (70-90%) to Hb-building erythrocytes, reticulocytes, enzymes/coenzymes or after vitamin C-catalyzed reduction to Fe.+ to →RES storage cells
