A circular bulge of the aorta lying directly behind the aortic valve, in which the three pockets of the aortic valve in the systole come to rest. The three sinus aortae (also called "valsalva sinuses") are the spaces covered in the systole by the three pockets of the aortic valve. They form in their totality the bulbus aortae.
