It is a protein which is produced by the action of the enzyme thrombin (factor IIa of the coagulation cascade) from the soluble filamentary precursor, the fibrinogen (Factor I of the coagulation cascade). The fibrin polymer is then isotised and forms a net, the blood clot ("white thrombus"), which closes the wound.
