The most important enzyme of blood clotting in humans and one of the blood clotting factors. Thrombin cleaves fibrinogen to fibrin. It also activates blood clotting factors V, VIII, XIII and, together with thrombomodulin, protein C. It has functions in the inflammatory process and in wound healing. Thrombin is formed in the liver and is found as a precursor (prothrombin) continuously in the blood plasma.
