Copper is a divalent metal that is absorbed in the stomach and proximal jejunum and transported to the liver bound to albumin or transcuprein.

Copper is stored in the liver in an amount of about 10-15 mg.

Copper is mostly found in the blood bound to the specific transport protein Coeruloplasmin, only a small part of the copper is present in the blood serum as "free" copper. Excretion of copper occurs predominantly via the bile, only 1 to 3 percent is excreted via the kidney.
