The basalioma is the most common malignant skintumor. It is also known as basal cell carcinoma because it develops from the basal cells of the epidermis. The tumor is also known as ″heller Hautkrebs″ - as a differentiation from the much rarer black skin cancer (melanoma), which often looks like a very dark mole.

Genetic factors and long-term exposure to the sun are the main causes of a basalioma. It occurs in parts of the body exposed to sunlight: preferably on the face (basalioma accounts for about 90 percent of all eyelid tumors), ears, scalp and throat.

From an initially inconspicuous, nodular change, often with small veins in the marginal area, a glassy, spherical tumour develops over months and years with a raised, pearl cord-like edge.
